The quality characteristics of the backup roll are high surface hardness of the roll body, good uniformity of hardness, deep quenching layer of the roll body, and good strength and toughness of the roll neck and body and mind. The quality characteristics of the backup roll are high wear resistance, good resistance to peeling, and strong accident resistance.

With the development of cold and hot rolling mills towards high-speed, large-scale, and high-precision directions, the requirements for backup rolls are also constantly increasing. From the requirements of modern cold and hot rolling mill support rolls for material, roll body hardness, uniformity, quenching depth, residual stress, etc., it is more suitable to choose forged steel support rolls. Compared with composite cast steel backup rolls, forged steel backup rolls have the characteristics of uniform material, better wear resistance, and resistance to peeling. Large forged steel backup rolls are high value-added products. Due to their high technical requirements, complex processes, difficult manufacturing, multiple production processes, and long cycles, only a few enterprises in China are able to produce them, and their output cannot meet market demand. As a result, modern cold and hot rolling mill enterprises have to rely on imports for the use of large forged steel backup rolls
