Refiner Segments

1. Overview

Refiner Segments (also known as refiner plates or discs) serve as the "heart" of disc refiners or conical refiners in the pulp and paper industry. Through the specific patterns designed on their surfaces (bars and grooves), they perform intense mechanical shearing, compression, and friction on fiber materials between the rotating rotor and the stationary stator.

The primary function of refiner segments is to alter the physical properties of pulp fibers through deflaking, cutting, and fibrillation. This process enhances paper strength (such as tensile strength and burst strength), improves paper formation and printability, and optimizes the overall efficiency of the paper machine.

2. Raw Materials

High-Chromium Cast Iron: Known for its excellent wear resistance and balanced mechanical properties.

Stainless Steel Alloys: Formulated specifically for corrosive environments to prevent rusting and degradation in acidic or alkaline pulp conditions.

Composite Materials: Modern high-performance segments may combine base alloys with high-hardness wear-resistant bars to achieve an optimal balance between cost and durability.

3. Manufacturing Process

Precision Casting (Investment or Sand Casting): A traditional method where molten metal is poured into molds. Advanced casting technology allows for finer, more precise tooth patterns to optimize refining results.

Machining: After casting, the segments undergo surface grinding and drilling to ensure precise installation dimensions and flatness of the bar tops.

Assembly & Welding: For complex structures, modular designs may be used, where refiner bars are high-strength welded (e.g., diffusion or brazing) to the base plate to prevent detachment during high-speed rotation.

Heat Treatment: Processes such as quenching and tempering are applied to enhance the hardness and impact toughness of the metal, ensuring the segments do not become brittle under severe loads.

4. Manufacturing Advantages

High Shearing Efficiency: Optimized geometric bar designs achieve higher fiber deflaking quality with lower energy consumption.

Extended Service Life: High-quality wear-resistant materials effectively resist abrasion from mineral impurities, reducing downtime and the frequency of replacements.

Customized Design: Tailored solutions for specific paper grades (e.g., board, newsprint, fine paper) and raw materials (e.g., hardwood, softwood, recycled pulp) regarding groove depth, width, and angle.

Lightweight and Enhanced Safety: Advanced installation designs (such as "Pro-safe" features) reduce the weight of the segments, making them easier to install while significantly minimizing safety risks during maintenance.

Superior Fluid Dynamics: Scientific groove arrangements promote uniform pulp distribution while facilitating heat dissipation and steam release, preventing quality degradation caused by excessive frictional heat.
